Factors That Affect Water Damage Cost
Water Damage Restoration Cost
Water damage can wreak havoc on your home or business. Even the smallest leak can lead to bigger problems if left untreated. Finding and identifying the source of your water damage is only half of the battle, identifying the extent of the damages to begin the mitigation process is next. Water damage can seep into the deepest parts of your property causing thousands of dollars of damage to your home. Because of that, cost can vary for a variety of reasons. Here’s a look at what could affect that cost.
1. THE SIZE OF THE AFFECTED AREA
The larger the area as you would assume, would cost more money. This is typically true. The larger the area means more time-consuming work, more staffing, and also the need for more equipment for dehumidification and drying. However, that’s not always the case and here’s some of the reasons why that cost can change below:
2. TIME SINCE THE OCCURANCE OF WATER DAMAGE
Water damage in your home or business is no joke. When a loss is discovered, it is best to act fast. Calling a business that specializes in water damage, water removal, and remediation is key. Waiting too long to call for help can actually cause the water category to change by allowing bacteria to grow causing the cost to rise even more.
3. TYPE OF WATER DAMAGE
When dealing with water damage, there is 3 categories of water ranging from clean to biohazard. The more hazardous the water, the higher mitigation and treatment costs will be due to additional treatments needed to properly clean and treat your property.
- CLEAN WATER, or water that does not pose a threat to humans. Possible causes of this type of damage includes broken appliances or sink overflows.
- GREY WATER. This means that the water is contaminated & may cause sickness if ingested. This type of water contains microorganisms. Broken toilets, broken sump pumps, & seepage may cause category 2 water damage.
- BLACK WATER. This type of water is unsanitary, as it contains bacteria and other organisms that cause sickness. The possible sources of black water damage include sewage problems and contamination of standing water.
4. TYPE OF MATERIALS AFFECTED
Water damage costs can vary due to the materials affected. That is because water affects materials differently. For example, laminate flooring will react differently when being exposed to water than carpet would. If it is carpet that has been freshly exposed to clean water, it can be extracted and dried without needing to be removed and replaced. Whereas laminate flooring on the other hand will often times swell and need replaced. Another factor to take into account would be replacement costs for materials affected.
5. MOLD GROWTH
Waiting too long to have your home properly inspected after a water damage can lead to mold growth. Any amount of water if left untreated can create a potentially hazardous environment for you and your family. The only way to prevent mold and mildew damage is to ensure excess moisture has been removed from all affected materials. Any mold related damage would be added on to the service as an extra step to your water damage repair in return costing you more money.
